Baby Animals

Just for Jessica and James....I finally got it sorted out.  Below you will find pictures of our 14 new baby chicks and our 18 piglets.

The chicks are two weeks old now and they have doubled in size.  They are starting to grow their proper feathers and its getting easier to work out which breed they are now, except for the white ones...they still could be either one of two breeds!  The brown ones are Barnevelders, they have scalloped like patterns, edged in black.  The ginger looking things are Rhode Island Reds.  There are  two odd ones, a black and grey chick.  The black chick is an Australorp and the grey one is the Dorking.  They are so cute.  They can sort of fly already and do a sort of flap and run sprint, its hilarious.  They already know that humans mean food and you have to be really careful not to stand on them when trying to feed them.

The 18 piglets are from two litters.  V was away when our smaller sow gave birth to 11 piglets last Sunday (29th january 2012), but sadly four died.  But the seven she has now are all happy and healthy!  The big sow gave birth to 13 piglets last Thursday (2nd Feb 2012) - we were both away for that occasion.  Fortunately our good friends who were housesitting took care of it all.  They only lost 2!  However, there seems to be two runts....still so very cute.  You can see in the pictures that we appear to have two exotic looking piglets.  They are basically black but have horizontal brown stripes going along their body.  The second litter is smaller because they are younger.  They seem to happily jump into each others pens, but only when mum is feeding.  They around like crazy chasing each other...they even wag their tails!!  Vaughan was able to actually get in with them yesterday and mum seemed happy enough.  The piglets let him scratch and pat them...I want a turn now!!
